Contact Lenses 101 – Which Type Is Right For You?

Advantages of Contact Lenses

There are lots of situations where contact lenses can give you more freedom than glasses. Many people wear them for playing sports and physical activities to benefit from a wider field of vision, and not having to worry about glasses sliding down their nose because of sweat can be a real advantage here too.

Some people also choose to wear contact lenses for special occasions as it offers a natural look that goes with any outfit, and for others, the decision to wear them is down to pure comfort and convenience for activities like driving, cooking, or simply relaxing at home.

Types of Contact Lenses

For many of our patients, daily disposable contact lenses are by far the most popular and safest option. They’re easy to use and hygienic too, as there’s no need to clean them and store them in lens solution. As the name suggests, you simply wear them for a day, throw them away before you go to sleep, and insert a fresh pair the next morning.

We also prescribe two-weekly and monthly disposable lenses that may be recommended for higher prescriptions. These are designed to provide high oxygen transmissibility to ensure you experience added comfort and breathability, as you would with daily disposables.

Whatever contact lenses we advise for you, you can rest assured that with modern technology, they cover most vision correction needs, including toric lenses for astigmatism, and multifocals, for those who usually wear varifocal glasses.

We also supply contact lenses for children, including the revolutionary MiSight 1-day contact lenses. Not only do these soft lenses correct myopia, aka, short-sightedness, but they are also designed and clinically proven to slow down its progression.

This is incredibly important, as 1 in 3 people in the UK are now myopic. For children, deteriorating myopia can increase their risk of developing sight threatening conditions like glaucoma, and retinal detachments in adulthood.

As independent opticians in Cobham, we’re not tied down to any supplier, and have the freedom to choose the best lenses for your needs from any brand, including Acuvue OASYS 1-Day, My Day, Dailies Total One, and extended wear options like Biofinity.

Our Personalised Service

If you’re looking for contact lenses in Cobham, we are proud to be able to offer a service completely tailored to you, with a focus on continuity of care.

Firstly, if you’re due an eye exam, we’ll get you booked in so we can confirm your prescription is up to date. Patients who are new to contact lenses will be booked in for an hour-long initial consultation, which includes a contact lens fitting and teach carried out by Sachin, our main optometrist and co-owner.

Once you are completely confident about inserting and removing your lenses, Sachin will give you a set of trial lenses to take away and try wearing at home, as well as an end-of-trial appointment 1 or 2 weeks later to see how you got on. Your initial consultation fee also includes subsequent follow-up appointments until we find the best contact lenses for your visual and lifestyle needs.

We are proud to be one of very few independent opticians who ensures you are seen by an optometrist at every stage of your contact lens journey.

Often, other practices will assign one of their staff to carry out a contact lens teach with you, however, here at The Optical Co, Sachin will do all the testing, right from the initial eye exam and lens consultation, to the contact lens teaches, and all after care check-ups.
